The Alphington Station Planting Working Bee is a community-led project to restore and enhance the landscape around Alphington Railway Station using indigenous plants sourced from the local area.

Working with permission from VicTrack, volunteers have been transforming the station precinct for more than 15 years. Thanks to these efforts, a strong canopy of indigenous trees has been established. Our current focus is on creating a diverse mid-storey and ground layer that provides habitat for small birds, native insects and reptiles while making the station surrounds more attractive and resilient.

Working bees are held throughout the year and typically involve:

• Planting indigenous shrubs, grasses and groundcovers
• Removing environmental weeds
• Spreading mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture
• Installing natural habitat features, including basalt rock piles for lizards and insects
• General maintenance of existing plantings

No gardening experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome. Whether you can spare a couple of hours or just drop by for a short time, your contribution makes a real difference.

How You Can Help

We are always looking for volunteers and donations of materials, including:

• Large cardboard boxes (used beneath mulch for natural weed suppression)
• Basalt rocks for habitat creation and garden edging
• Garden stakes for marking new plantings
• Gardening tools such as wheelbarrows, spades, forks and watering cans
• People interested in growing indigenous seedlings for future planting days
